European Year of the Volunteer 2011

EYOV.jpg

Some of you will already be aware 2011 is the European Year of Volunteering. A conference was held at Leeds Armouries in December where representatives of the volunteering sector from across Europe came together to meet and exchange information on all aspects of running their services. In addition to the conference each European visitor was invited to spend some time with a local organisation like us to share information and ideas.

Future Funding Update

You will know that as a result of Government Spending Cuts many public services and organisations are now facing a very uncertain future.

Just like many other charities in the city, our financial position is now critical. We are waiting to hear from the local council and government about funding for our service from April but due to the impact of government cuts on local planning, it will probably be mid Feb/early March before we have any clear information.

New Trustee and Volunteers

“Welcome” to Ian Gale who has recently become one of our volunteer trustees.

Family Statistics

Marriages - The average age of first marriage is 32 for men and 30 for women. The majority (69%) of divorces are to couples where it is a first marriage for both. 68% of divorces are granted to women, the most common reasons are behaviour, adultery and separation for at least 2 years.

Children - 53% of divorces involve children, almost two thirds of whom are under 10 years of age. In 2006 126,030 children experienced the divorce of their parents. More than 3/4 of children grow up in a family headed by a couple. 45% of all live births are outside of marriage.

Volunteer Event -- 'The Loft'

Band Playing

I was really excited when I received confirmation of a ticket to attend the celebration of “volunteering in the city” at the Loft on the 30th September.

The venue soon filled up as other volunteers and representatives from volunteering organisations arrived.

The “mistress” of ceremonies was Home-Start’s very own volunteer Jane. She introduced the Deputy Mayor who told us what we already know, how valuable we are and how the service couldn’t be delivered in the same way by statutory agencies. He also drew the raffle and along with many others I won a bottle of wine.
